The Pen I Hold

It is said that the pen
is mightier than the sword.
Indeed, it is,
this tool of words.

This crystal-clear object,
obscured by the vein
of it's life blood,
the ebony ink,
serves as a medium
to our minds and hearts.

With each word we write,
a little more of it's life
is sucked away.

Never fear,
it doesn't mind.

This is it's fate,
it's purpose in life.

We use this tool
to transfer our thoughts
to written word
as the silver tip
glides along the page.

The written word
Serves as a memorial
to it's life spent translating
cognitions to language
that other eyes may see.

While this simple object
is taken for granted,
there are those who
cherish it.

Like human beings,
pens can be very different
from one another.

This ranges from
the design of it's body
to the color of the ink.

We select one
that connects to us somehow
and allow it to
reveal our thoughts
of any kind
until the last drop of ink
is spent.
I did this today as an in-class assignment for English 101. The task was to take any object in the room and describe it any way you wanted to. I chose my pen, but it extended to every pen in general. Not only that, but I very much strayed from the basic physical description.

Great job. The way this moved from one stanza to the next was perfect, and the way the pen was somewhat personified was done extremely well.
